Use It or Lose It

Hey everyone! How’s your Monday going so far? I feel like I have been a busy bee today. Actually I really haven’t, but I have done more today than I have during my typical weekdays this summer break. I’ve been lazy- I know. But I think after finishing a year of grad school I deserve this time to relax and enjoy doing nothing :).

Bright and early this morning I met Anthony, one of my best friends from high school for breakfast. I had a yummy omelet stuffed with spinach, tomatoes, and peppers and on the side there was wheat toast and fresh fruit! I didn’t take any pics because I looked like crapola. BUT, here is one of us from last summer! Side note– I miss my longer hair…can anyone tell me how to make it grow fast??

At a friend's wedding last summer!

After our breakfast I came home and lounged before I picked up and drove my Nana (that’s what I call my grandma btw) to the hospital so she could have a procedure done.

My plan was to go workout after that- but of course, I was starving! I came home and ate lunch and by that point my motivation to drive to the gym and slug away on a cardio machine had gone down the drain. I didn’t really take a rest day last week, unless you count going to Cedar Point (but I don’t because we walked and stood all day) so figured that I would just take the day off.

But then I got an idea to do some tap dancing in my basement. You see, I am going to be joining a dance group in the fall when I go back to Boston (I danced competitively when I was younger) and figured that I should probably get some practice in considering I haven’t really danced much in the 7 years since I stopped.

My tap shoes!

I found some YouTube videos with a guy teaching combinations (small routines) and I followed them for about 40 minutes! I had so much fun tapping again, but I quickly realized that I might need to practice a lot more than I thought. I can still do all of the steps that I used to be able to do, but it’s much more difficult for me to put them together when learning a routine. Apparently that statement- “use it or lose it” is actually kind of true! Even though it appears that my talent level has gone down, I did really enjoy being in those shoes again and I had fun- that’s what counts!

When I was finished in the basement I came upstairs to find poor Mia in her crate. She had an appointment with the groomer today and she had to be shaved pretty close because her fur was matted underneath :(. Poor thing, you can tell she’s miserable. She keeps running inside her crate and laying down- and she looks so sad! She doesn’t want to eat or go outside either.

And then there’s Cooper who apparently thinks that laying on a desk surrounded by bills is the best thing ever.

Oh he’s such a stinker ;). But you can’t help but love him!

And finally, after going grocery shopping for my mom, I am home! I think I’m going to download a new book to read. Any suggestions? I want something kind of light hearted or a mystery/thriller.

Hope the rest of your day is great!

Questions

Have you ever tried something that you used to be really good at, only to realize that if you don’t use it you can in fact lose it? (at least to some extent)

Have you actually been busy today? What all have you done?

  1. Swimming! I am totally slow and not graceful in the water now lol. I used to be on swim team in high school. oh well!

I have been busy running errands doing paper work, but I fit in 6.75 miles this morning!

  2. Your pup is so cute!

I used to be able to tumble pretty well (I used to be a gymnast and cheerleader)…and I tried it again recently at a gym and wow was that a rude awakening!!! But it was still fun and something I want to do more!

Just been sitting at my desk…slaving away and kind of liking how busy things have been. Makes the day fly!

  3. I never took dance lessons growing up but I always love seeing tap dance routines. I don’t understand how you can move your feet that fast!

  4. You look gorg with long OR short hair! Win-win situation.

Whenever I pick up my guitar, it always takes a few minutes before I can get the hang of it again. Part of that is physical though, because you need to build up calluses on your fingers!

  5. Rumor has it pre natal vitamins make your hair grow faster. My sister has been trying it and says it is working.

  6. I used to be pretty good at basketball, but i haven’t played much since high school. I def don’t have the energy levels to play like i used to!

I was a lil busy this morning, I finally mailed out my graduation announcements! Can’t believe I’m done with grad school and turn in my big paper on Friday! I also had to go to the bank since my iphone app wouldn’t deposit my check.

Enjoy the free time while you can, I feel so lost with not much to do while I look for a job, but I know this is the last time I’ll ever really have nothing to do again for a long time!

  7. Oh gosh yes. I used to be a cheerleader back in middle school/high school. Ask me to do a toe touch or herkie now and that would just be hilarious!

  8. I’m so impressed that you can tapdance!!! I want to be good at ANY type of dancing and I’m not. So sad. 😦 And I have to “ditto” the comment above me. I used to be a cheerleader, but I would be scared to try and do a toe-touch now!! It wouldn’t be a pretty sight!! 😉

  9. I lived away at a ballet school from grade 6-11 -I love that you dance too! My sister did tap; but I was all ballet.

I don’t do it at all nowadays, so I think I’ve definitely lost it!

  10. I used to play guitar to the point where I had rock hard calluses on the tips of all my fingers. I quit for a little while, tried to take it up again, and realized that my fingers weren’t as limber anymore, and they hurrrrrrt! Definitely lost it… but it’s comforting to know that you can always get it back if you work at it again 😀

  11. My Monday has been JAM. PACKED. The first day back from vacation is always crazy!

Your post title definitely lured me in. My BodyPump instructor always yells out “Use it or LOSE IT” during class, hehe 🙂

That’s awesome about the tap dancing!

  12. That’s awesome! I used to tap dance too! But the farthest I ever got was falaps and ball-changes 😦

  13. sara @ the foodie diaries

I’ve always wanted to learn how to tap!! Jealous 🙂 Also, my roommate took prenatal vitamins and it really helped her hair grow! Goodluck!

  14. I miss tapping! I started tap dancing when I was 3 and stopped only a few years ago. What was the website that you used? That would be a great workout that doesn’t feel like a workout!

  15. I USED to be good at cheerleading and tumbling..But I haven’t even attempted to tumble for 3 years because I know I’ll hurt myself! Love the tap shoes btw. I wanted to do tap when I was little but after practicing on the tile floors in my house, my shoes went “missing”..thanks parents. 😉

  16. I used to be able to play the piano and just pick up sheet music to play. I haven’t practiced in years, and I was totally sad that it wasn’t like riding a bike. I have the desire to play, but neither the time nor piano to get back into it.

  17. hahaha I used to be really good at hula hooping. Haven’t tried it in years. Feel like it’s like riding a bike but would be curious to see if Ive still got it;-)
