Is It Real Hunger?

Hello friends :). I hope you all had fabulous weekends!

Yesterday my roommies and I went to the SoWa Open Market in Boston. It was the first time we’d ever been and it was so cool! There were lots of different types of vendors- clothing, art, jewelry, knick-knacks, and there was an entire vintage market. There was also a farmers market with some very yummy looking food.

This place was super fabulous for people watching. I don’t know about you, but I could sit for a long time and just observe all of the people around me. And there was lots of dog watching going on too. So many people had dogs and they were all adorable :).

And I may have also purchased a new Vera Bradley yesterday hehe. I wanted a bag I could carry to class so I don’t always have to use my backpack.

———-

The other day, Kristen tagged me in a childhood questionnaire! Here are my answers to the questions:

  1. How far back do you remember your childhood? – I remember some things from preschool, so I guess that would be like 3-4 years old. I remember playing on the playground, getting bit in the armpit (yes, this happened) because another girl wanted to be on the jungle gym and wanted me off, and having my preschool bf :).
  2. Who would you say had the biggest part in raising you? – Both of my parents.
  3. Name 3 of your favorite childhood toys – Barbies, Polly Pockets, and my American Girl doll
  4. What was your favorite Disney movie? – Oh man, I have way more than one haha. But, one of them is definitely Beauty and The Beast.
  5. Favorite Cartoon – Again, I had way more than one…but my brother and I used to love watching Scooby Doo.
  6. Were you an only child? – No, I have a younger brother!
  7. Where did you live at the age of 4? – I lived with my parents in our first house. We moved when I was 7.
  8. Where were you born? – Columbus, OH
  9. What were you scared of most as a child? – I’m not entirely sure that I really remember, but I’ve always been scared of spiders.
  10. What’s your favorite childhood memory? – I have too many to count. I had a great childhood!

———-

Since I’ve started back at school again, I’ve noticed something: I am hungrier! Like, a lot hungrier than I was during the summer. I’m not entirely sure why this is, but it’s really annoying haha. I feel like I have to snack all the effing time because of it.

But, the big question is: am I really hungry? Or does my mind trick me into thinking I’m hungry when I’m sitting in class or studying and I’d rather be doing something else. Those are the times when I notice my hunger and just want to snack on food, even if I’ve already had something to eat. I try to really listen to my body, but sometimes the hunger and growling stomach win out and I just have to eat haha. It’s frustrating because I don’t really have any reason to be hungrier than I was over the summer, so how am I supposed to know if my hunger is real?

Anyway, I hope you all have fabulous Mondays!

Questions:

In school, did you/do you carry a backpack or some other kind of bag?

Answer one of the childhood questions!

Do you get hungry when you’re in class or at work and not know if you’re actually hungry? How do you deal with it?

  1. yay for being back in school!! I love your new bag! Vera Bradley is my favorite! In high school I carried a VB or a Longchamp to class but before that it was all about my bright yellow LL Bean monogrammed back pack hahaha….. I still miss that bag actually hahahah
My Favorite Disney Movie was Little Mermaid. and Beauty and the Beast but the beginning always scared me!

  2. Such a cool looking market! I emailed the boyfriend the link so we can check it out during my next Boston weekend πŸ™‚ And Beauty and the Beast is my absolute FAVORITE. Mom got it for me on DVD for Christmas this year and insisted we watch it, and of course I cried. I used to have sheets, a Chip cup, Mrs. Potts earrings, I even had a fake rose in the glass (plastic) container! I think I identified with Belle because she was weird and loved to read. And I still want a library like Beast’s, complete with ladders.

I have to have my snacks or I get super hungry (and grumpy). Almost snacktime now! I usually eat dinner at 5ish, but I’ve been trying to eat at a more normal time so there isn’t as much time between my dinner and my nighttime snack. But it’s getting dark so early, I just want to eat early so I can photograph!

  3. I carry my normal purse around school (By the way– I LOVE Vera Bradley!! I just got a new VB planner and i’m a little overly obsessed with it… πŸ˜‰ )

My trick to discover if I’m truly hungry is to drink a good amount of water. If afterwards I’m content, then I know that my body was just craving something. If my tummy is still growling, I know that it was legitimate.

  4. I love the Vera bag. That is all I carried around in college. Mine was in Java Blue which they have since retired… 😦

When things slow down or I get bored I tend to eat even if I’m not hungry. It’s hard not to pull open the snack drawer when I know I probably don’t need to eat.

My favorite Disney movie is The Jungle Book. Gotta love the Bare Necessities! πŸ™‚

  5. When I was in school, I always used a purse instead of a backpack. I like that Vera Bradley print a lot! I used to get hungry all. the. time. when I was in school, especially when I was studying. Is it weird to believe that thinking requires a lot of energy?? I would have a small snack or cup of tea when this happened and my hunger usually went away!

  6. Yup, I was an only child. Cute survey! I am glad someone else has a little difficulty telling when they’re hungry or not. I mean, I can usually tell, but there’s definitely gray area, especially during times of heightened stress, severe boredom, and of course PMS!

  7. The Coffee Crazed Teacher

I am jealous that you have such a wonderful Farmers Market by you. I live in Ft. Myers, and there is NOTHING here. I always go when I visit Ft. Lauderdale area or my bf in ORlando. I would be there every weekend if I could!
Love your new bag. I ALWAYS carried a tote bag of some sort to class instead of a backpack. I always thought I looked like a nerd with a bp on πŸ™‚
My fav Disney movie is Aladdin, I always wanted to look like/be like Jasmine. I even had her PJ’s as a kid, so cool! haha
I have started back to work, I am a teacher, and have noticed I am constantly hungry as well. I feel like I can’t wait for lunch time because I get so sick to my stomach from being hungry and end up snacking every hour or so. I think I might be become a little hypoglycemic(sp?) because of how dizzy/headachey I get from not eating. Not fun! But there is nothing wrong with snacking, as long as it isn’t a candy bar every time!

Enjoy your Monday, I love reading your posts!

  8. I loved Beauty and the Beast and Scooby Doo too!!! So awesome.. I’d still enjoy watching both now πŸ™‚

And I’m always hungrier during the school year too.. I don’t know why! I always have to bring a snack with me to class because my stomach will start growling, and I hate when that happens!

  9. Ooh, that’s a toughie. Maybe try drinking a big glass of water and waiting 20 minutes? Then if you’re still feeling hungry, have a snack. That might be a good way to determine if you’re actually hungry, ya know? I’ve been drinking fruit flavored teas lately when I feel snacky, but not hungry and it’s worked out well and keeps me from overeating. Then again, being back in school will take it out of you–you might just need more fuel now!

  10. Love your new bag! I used a backpack when I first started college, and then I switched to a one shoulder laptop bag for the second half of my college years. I was always carrying around tonnes of stuff, so I needed a bag or I probably would have gone a little loopy. And I was always hungrier when I was in school too… I think we tend to underestimate how much fuel our brain needs to think/memorize/study… that kind of work takes up a lot of energy!

When I was little, my favorite toys were My Little Pony, My Littlest Pet Shop, and teddies πŸ˜€

  11. This is a good post for me to read right now… I am struggling with this too! I tend to get so munchy in class especially, and I do think it’s because I am bored… although sometimes I am truly hungry! It is the worst when I am trying to read or study something I don’t want to do. My mind wanders to food- what to eat, what not to eat, what I should/shouldn’t have… ugh so sick of the same boring thoughts!

P.s love the Vera bag, I am rather obsessed with pretty much all of the designs, bags and accessories!

  12. i’ve read a lot of research that says when you’re dehydrated your body will actually tell you it’s hungry so maybe if you feel like you’re eating enough, you should try to drink more and that might help?

  13. Oh my, I LOVE Vera Bradley! Good choice. πŸ™‚ I usually used a big purse or tote in college for my stuff too.

I can relate to you in “feeling” hungry more often when I was in school and now sometimes when I’m working too. I associate it often times to stress and/or boredom. I “test” my hunger by asking myself, “Would I eat an apple or carrots right now?” If my answer is no, then I know that I’m not truly hungry. Hope this help!

  14. Funny you posted this … I’m often dying for my mid-morning snack way too early in the morning. I don’t think it’s that I’m hungry yet, I think that I want to take a quick work break.

Similarly at home, I think quite frequently I’m not REALLY hungry. It’s boredom. Which is ridiculous. So I’m going to spend 30 seconds eating a snack, consuming those calories … and then I’m bored again? Makes total sense. πŸ˜‰

  15. sometimes when a new schedule starts, we get busy and might be more active than we think. Maybe thats your hunger. Your body needs it though, so go with it.
    πŸ™‚

    p.s
    Loved rainbow bright!

  16. I love the SOWA market, I got brownies when I was there and they have such amazing looking gifts!

  17. I carry a back-pack and I love it.
I remember back until I was about 2 or 3. The first house I lived in (this is a big deal, there have been sooo many!), playing in the front yard with a hose…I didn’t do preschool but I remember my kindergarten boyfriend as well haha…oh, young love.
I’ve gotten really good at being able to distinguish between my fake and real “hungries”….my fake ones occur when I am simply bored and want something to do- real hungries can also occur when bored though but what makes the difference is that I canNOT stop thinking about eating and get grouchy when I am actually hungry. Eventually the stomach growls, but that is typically my last sign. I manage the fake hungries by acknowledging how I feel (bored) and take a break to do something I enjoy for 5-10 mins. and drink some water.

  18. I always carried a backpack – even in college! I think I liked the whole handsfree and evenly distributed weight on my shoulders. Haha- kind of silly. I always got hungry in class – so I was always that annoying gal that ate in class!

  19. I was born in Michigan, but lived in Hilliard, OH (super close to Columbus) for five years when my dad was transferred for work.

  20. Interesting! I just started a new job 3 weeks ago, and I think I’m less hungry than I was when I was unemployed. Mainly becuase I had nothing to do (except blog really…and pics of food are quite abundant!) and I just thought about food, and ate out of boredom. At work the time goes by quickly (most of the time ha) when I’m busy, and suddenly it’s 5pm and I have to eat dinner or work out. When I was in school I’d eat more under stress, but that’s a separate thing. Not sure where yours is coming from! Whenever I have “hungrier” periods, I always keep steamed broccoli in my fridge; that way, I can always munch on something — even if just for the satisfaction of chewing something, if i’m not truly “hungry”

  21. When I was in school I carried a big bag. I’m with you on the hunger thing. Now that I’m back at work I’m always hungry! I have snacks with me all the time so I’ll have some crackers, a granola bar, or some yogurt.

  22. healthycollegegirl

I love your new bag!! I carry a backpack usually because I like to bring my computer, but I really want a new fun bookbag.
I have been way hungrier since school started! I am constantly having to assess if it’s real hunger or not. I’ve been snacking like crazy! haha

  23. sara @ the foodie diaries

I used to always carry a large purse to class so I could fit my laptop and any other random stuff I might need throughout the day. I don’t think I ever brought a backpack!

  24. mind tricks! all mind tricks! For some reason I am always more hungry when I am working for home rather than at work, and I think it is because my snacks are all so readily available.
My stomach is currently eating itself actually…I think it’s snack time!

    LOVE that bag!

  25. i recently quit m job so i have a lot of free time and i have found i am “hungrier” a lot more now too, but i think the same thing. am i just hungry because i’m bored and thinking about food? or am i really hungry? if i had a job and was running around, i wouldn’t be thinking of food and probably wouldn’t be hungry. but i’ve always been told and am trying to learn to listen to your body. if you’re not sure if you’re really hungry or not, have a glass of water, if that does it, you weren’t, if you’re still hungry, you are! so eat. haha.

  26. I love people watching too! It’s so relaxing and doesn’t get boring. I’m always hungry…in my mind ;p I find the old water trick helps. Have a drink of water, if you still feel hungry after then it’s real hunger otherwise probably just subconciously bored and want something to be doing. I loved..ok LOVE the Lion King 2. It isn’t that well known but the songs are luh! I enjoyed reading your answers!

  27. I am in love with Vera Bradley! That pattern is so adorable!

  28. I would carry a messanger bag to class, but when I had to hit the library with lots of textbooks I’d break out the trusty LLBean backpack. I love American Girl dolls. I had Molly plus all the books.

  29. I feel like I am tricked into thinking I am hungry ALLLL the time. Boredom hunger, and it drives me crazy! I try to do something active to take my mind off of it, but a lot of the times I will eat anyway!

  30. Sounds like we have a lot in common πŸ™‚
    Loved this post!
