I Need New Shoes

Hi guys! Hope everyone is having a great Monday :).

This morning I ran 4 miles on the treadmill…I am so proud of myself! Haha

You see, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a runner. I like to run, but running doesn’t always like me. You can read this post here to learn more about it! That’s why I usually only go about 3 miles when I do run, but sometimes it just feels good so I keep going.

About 30 minutes into my run today, my ankles started hurting. I kept going, which was probably really stupid but whatever. I didn’t want to quit haha. My ankles never hurt when I run, and therefore my conclusion is that I need a new pair of shoes.

The shoes I currently have are nearing the 8-month-old mark: I got them for Christmas. I really like them, but I don’t think they are providing the support and cushion they should be anymore. I’ve read so many times that you should get new shoes after running so many miles…blah blah blah. What about those of us who aren’t just runners? How should we gage when to get new shoes?

What I normally do is get shoes twice a year – once around Christmas time and once around June or the beginning of July. So, each pair gets about 6 months of wear.  My current pair is a little past this 6 month mark. I was trying to save some money and see how long I could use them. Apparently, not much longer.

In addition to the new ankle pain that I had this morning, I’ve also recently noticed some shin pain whenever I’m on the treadmill or doing exercises that are high impact on my legs. Both of these are things that I’ve noticed in the past whenever my shoes started dying.

I’m thinking that tomorrow I will go shopping for some new shoes. I don’t really want any more joint/bone pain when I’m exercising…no thank you.

The Great Fundraising Act

As most of you probably now, the auction for Susan is currently happening!

I urge you all to go over the Janetha’s blog to check everything out and look at all of the awesome items!! I’ve been looking at it all day :). I must say, I think it is absolutely AMAZING what this blogging community is doing! I’m so proud to be a part of it!

Hope you all have an awesome day!

  1. running shoes–i am the worst with replacing my shoes…i try and suck it up and then blam, foot pains (feel ya girl). I heard New Balance makes really cushiony shoes, I usually stick with Adidas or Nike (I like a little bit of a harder sole).

  2. I don’t run a lot, but I’m bad about replacing my shoes! I usually look for new ones when I can’t feel the arch anymore. I have some bum heels from gymnastics. :p Hope you find some you like tomorrow!

  3. Once I started running more I got nervous about proper shoes. I went to the Running Room (i’m not sure if you’ve ever heard of that store) but I just asked someone to help me find out what shoe works best for me. I took off my shoes and someone watched me as I walked across the room. I guess this way they can see how my foot moves and they could tell what shoe would be best. I found this very helpful and have bought several pairs of shoes since that I haven’t had any issues or pain from. There was no pressure to buy my shoes there, and there was no charge for the advice. I’ve included a link to their website called tips for shoe buying
    http://www.runningroom.com/hm/inside.php?id=2357

  4. I can defineitely notice when I haven’t replaced my running shoes in awhile. I went to a professional running store to have my stride looked at and then fit with the best shoes for my feet, legs and stride. I wear Asics Kayanos and LOVE THEM 🙂

  5. You should be replacing your shoes every 300-400 miles at most. FYI 😉

  6. I’ve always used Asics, and I really like them. But my most recent shoes are Saucony. I overpronate a lot, so I needed ones with LOTS of support. And these particular shoes give me the support I need.

I don’t think any particular brand is generally “better” or “worse,” I think it just depends on your feet and your needs.

    Good luck! 🙂

  7. I’m so bad about shoes! I don’t run so I just use my mom’s old shoes. I know its bad, but she buys such nice running shoes and goes through them so quickly, so I take what I can get. Life on a grad student budget. When I used to play bball in high school I used to get shin splints alllll the time, especially at the beginning of the season.

  8. try out kswiss shoes. I use the keauhou or misouls! Awesome awesome!! Let me know if you look into them and I’ll send you a link.
    Happy Running!

  9. I get a new pair of shoes about every 3 months or so. I put about 150 miles a month on my shoes at least so I go through them pretty fast. Right now I’m wearing Asics gel revolution shoes and love them

  10. ittybitsofbalance

Be careful with running shoes! Before I knew anything about running I would train in Nike Shox and got horrible shin splints because of it

    No bueno 😦

My favorite kind of running shoes are Asics– I swear by them! You can get them pretty cheap too at Rack Room Shoes 😉

  11. I’m so horrible with buying new running shoes. I have only had two pairs of running shoes since I started running about 4 years ago. And I’ve run a half-marathon in the second pair. I guess I just like them warn in 🙂

  12. I tried my darndest to win something…but I was outbid each time, right up until 30 minutes til the end! Sigh.

Also – good work on the morning run! Im trying to pep talk myself into a work out tomorrow morning.

  13. Shoes are definitely an important investment for those who run a lot. When I got more serious about running, I went to get properly fitted for a new pair of shoes, and it was probably the best decision ever. It made running a lot easier, and I think I probably avoided some injuries as well, as my old shoes were causing me some problems. I use Brooks now, but I also love Asics.

  14. Can’t wait to participate in Janetha’s auction — so amazing of her to do that! I love running in Brooks. Used to run in Asics but recently switched over…

  15. Have you ever been fitted for a good pair of running shoes? If not, I recommend going to a local specialty running store. Good shoes pay off!

  16. The running shoe issue can be tough because good ones can be so pricey! I’m definitely in need of some new ones but I’m hoping to wait another month.

Re the auction, I had wanted to buy something but my hubs wisely said we couldn’t compete with the bids at this moment. It’s such a great cause! 😀

  17. My running shoes are SO. OLD.
I know I need to get new ones but I keep putting it off. Surprisingly though, I have never had any pain after a run. I don’t know if I still could be doing damage though, even without the pain. I need to get on the new shoe bandwagon. And I probably should get a running assessment as well, since I didn’t do that with my last pair!

The auction warmed my heart 🙂 everything was out of my price range pretty quickly, but they raised so much money! So awesome.

  18. I run, but I’m also not a “runner.” I never know when to get new shoes. The tread is a poor indicator since so many of my miles are elliptical or stair climber miles. Also, I don’t track how many miles I actually run. I probably need to invest in a new pair of cross trainers and and new pair of running shoes instead of just wearing one for both.

I’m a Mizuno fan for running though, so I recommend checking those out.

  19. I have had my fair share of running shoes. I tried a whole bunch of brands until I finally found ones that I really like. I had Brooks but those gave me shin splints, so I finally bought a pair of Mizunos and love them! (They may be a little pricey, but the extra cost beats the pain!)

  20. I just got some new shoes!! I am trying out the new Kswisse tubes…have you heard of them? They are lightweight, very cushiony, and I heard they were good for running…so far so goo!:)

  21. I consider myself a “runner” but even if I wasn’t, I would buy Asics. Asics are amazing running shoes, and they come in a lot of different varieties depending on how much you want to spend, how much support, cushioning you need, if you run on roads vs. trails… I highly suggest Asics!
But aside from my shameless plug for Asics, you could go to a running store and have them examine how you run to pick the shoe best fitted to your needs. Just an idea!
